He has served in the Army for nine and a half years and could easily do another nine, or many times that. Becker is a second-year student at SIPA. He spent his first year at Sciences Po in Paris (as part of a dual degree program with Columbia). Throughout his interview, he kept the conversation general, insisting that was for his own personal privacy, not because anything he did was a secret. His missions and jobs are generally public information. Talk to him in person, he’ll tell you almost anything you want to know â€" just don’t bring your pen along. Becker weighed each word carefully. He spoke in bullet points. Everything he said was rehearsed in his head. Whatever he said that wasn’t rehearsed was off the record, and tended to be the most fascinating details. And, as he spoke, he had a careful eye on the pen and notepad in front of him. “I want to be very careful of what image I represent of my profession because I have a lot of respect for the other people here at SIPA and elsewhere who do what I do, and also for my profession’s role in society,” said Becker. “Also because people don’t really have much exposure to people in my profession, so I don’t want to be perceived as representing the whole organization.   I’m only speaking for myself as an individual.” Later in the interview he added, “I think sometimes our activities are inaccurately caricatured.” Becker is from California. He planned to go to the University of California for free, but he really wanted to go to Georgetown.   “I needed funding, which ROTC provided,” he said. That’s when he signed up for the U.S. Army. He studied International Relations and was an intercollegiate athlete in his first year at Georgetown. “My life as a student wasn’t affected too much. It was basically like having an extra class or two a week. And I had to cut my hair and shave my beard,” he added. After graduating from college and doing the Army’s standard initial training, he moved to Italy. He was a platoon leader there until the onset of the Iraq War in 2003, doing combat training. “It was an airborne unit and we mostly trained for airfield seizures and non-combatant evacuation operations.” Usually the scenarios had to do with civil instability. ?“Airfield seizure was the first thing we did in Iraq. The first week went pretty much like training â€" we seized an airfield. Once there was no more traditional war to fight, that’s when it got complicated, and that’s when it got interesting to me. I got to apply what I learned in college and learn a little bit about what it really meant in practice. My academic background helped me to do my job, and it helped me explain our mission to my soldiers.” Becker went to Iraq without much hesitation. “Privately I questioned it. But my obligation to perform my responsibilities was much more important… my job was to execute foreign policy, not to make it,” he said. “I signed up for the army knowing it was a tool of foreign policy, and that foreign policy is never perfect. I knew I would go forth on decisions made by those higher up.” Becker left Iraq in February 2004. He then went through a long process of training to transition to another role in the army. He returned to Iraq for eight months in 2007 during the Surge and served as an advisor to an Iraqi organization. After that, he spent the next year doing more training. In the summer of 2008, Becker went to Mali, as part of small-scale U.S. operations in the Pan-Sahel region. The army helped the Malian government control lawless areas of their country to prevent extremists from using them as a training base. Becker was basically like a consultant during that time. “It is one of the most fun things I have done in the army,” he said. “I was advising people who were a bit senior to me in rank, and they were very talented and dedicated professionals.” When Becker returned to the U.S. at the end of the summer in 2008, he began to apply for graduate schools. He described his decision to return to school as a simple professional calculation. To him, it was the equivalent of someone in investment management getting an MBA. But Becker is not your typical second-year SIPA student. While most of the class of 2011 is now worried about finding a job for May, Becker has jobs lined up for the next few years. His next step is a rotating faculty position at West Point. He expects to stay there for two or three years. He will then move on to work as a ‘foreign area officer’ focusing on Europe and transatlantic relations. To prepare for his new roles, Becker is in the International Security Policy concentration at SIPA and the Europe regional specialization. How does being on the ground relate to the academic theory? “The biggest lesson I have learned as a practitioner has been about the practical limitations of the use of force… You hear about the ‘fog of war,’ or ‘friction.’   You really see the fog of war. I learnt what that looks like and feels like. It’s really there.”

Profile of Serial Killer Robert Berdella

Robert Berdella was one of the most brutal serial killers in U.S. history who participated in despicable acts of sexual torture and murder in Kansas City, Missouri, between 1984 and 1987. Berdella was born in 1949 in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. The Berdella family was Catholic, but Robert left the church when he was in his teens. Berdella proved to be a good student, despite suffering from severe nearsightedness. To see, he had to wear thick glasses, which made him vulnerable to being bullied by his peers. His father was 39 years old when died from a heart attack. Berdella was 16 years old. Not long afterward, his mother remarried. Berdella did little to hide his anger and resentment towards his mother and stepfather. When Murderous Fantasies Began to Fester In 1967, Berdella decided to become a professor and enrolled in the Kansas City Art Institute. He quickly decided on a change of careers and studied to be a chef. It was during this time that his fantasies about torture and murder began to fester. He got some relief by torturing animals, but only for a short time. At age 19, he got into selling drugs and drinking a lot of alcohol. He was arrested for possession of LSD and marijuana, but the charges did not stick. He was asked to leave college in his second year after murdering a dog for the sake of art. For a few afterward, he worked as a chef, but quit and opened his store called Bob’s Bazarre Bazaar in Kansas City, Missouri. The store specialized in novelty items that appealed to those with darker and occult-type taste. Around the neighborhood, he was considered odd but was liked and participated in organizing a local community crime watch programs. However, inside his home, it was discovered that Robert ‘Bob’ Berdella lived in a world dominated by  sadomasochistic slavery, murder and barbarous torture. What Went On Behind Closed Doors On April 2, 1988, a neighbor found a young man on his porch clad in only a dog collar fastened around his neck. The man told the neighbor an incredible tale of sexual tortuous abuse that he had endured at the hands of Berdella. The police placed Berdella in custody and searched his home where 357 photographs of victims in various positions of torture were recovered. Also found were torture devices, occult literature, ritual robes, human skills and bones and a human head in Berdella’s yard. The Photographs Disclose Murder By April 4 the authorities had an overwhelming amount of evidence to charge Berdella on seven counts of sodomy, one count of felonious restraint and one account of first-degree assault. After closer scrutiny of the photographs, it was discovered that six of the 23 men identified were homicide victims. The other people in the pictures were there voluntarily and participated in  sadomasochistic activities with the victims. The Torture Diary Berdella established the Rules of the House which were mandatory for his victims or they risked being beaten or receiving bolts of electric shock on sensitive areas of their bodies. In a detailed diary that Berdella kept, he logged details and the effects of the torture he would subject upon his victims. He seemed to have a fascination with injecting drugs, bleach, and other caustics into the eyes and throats of his victims then anally raped or inserted foreign objects inside of them. No Indication of Satanic Rituals On December 19, 1988, Berdella pled guilty to one count of first and to an additional four counts of second-degree murder for the deaths of other victims. There were attempts by various media organizations to try to connect the crimes of Berdella to the idea of a national underground satanic group but the investigators responded that over 550 people were interviewed and at no point was there any indication that the crimes were connected to a satanic ritual or group. Life in Prison Berdella received life in prison where he died of a heart attack in 1992 soon after writing a letter to his minister claiming that the prison officials refused to give him his heart medication. His death was never investigated.

Although I’ve never been a naturally athletic person, my incredibly driven soccer mom imposed tennis upon me at an age when I was young and impressionable. My friends all played sports avidly and constantly made fun of me for being dead weight on the baseball, basketball and soccer teams. But my mother insisted that tennis was â€Å"my sport† and I believed her. After a while I became quite adept at the game, using an effective two-handed forehand. I walked off the court triumphantly when I won, my mother rewarding me with ice cream money and praise. In contrast, when I lost my world was shattered. I would be looked at disdainfully, judged for what I hadn’t done properly and sometimes even scolded for â€Å"not trying hard enough.† There was something my mother liked to call â€Å"killer instinct,† a Hammurabi-esque mindset that every great tennis player is supposed to have. If they cheat, you do the same. Anything to win. In some instances, my opponents would cry when they lost. They sometimes threw their racquets in conjunction with their tantrums. I must have been about twelve years old when I played the red-haired boy. He was a few years older than me, but what struck me as odd about him was that he lacked the killer instinct completely. He didn’t seem to care at all when he lost a point or made an error. Sometimes he even laughed. I asked him why he was so laid-back, and then he told me that the scores of the games we played didn’t matter. No one ever bothered to record them, no one was keeping a little black book with each player’s statistics. It didn’t matter who won or lost, as long as we had a good time playing the game. In my first year of high school I tried out for the tennis team and didn’t make it. My mother told me that if I didn’t try harder I’d be a â€Å"Boy Without A Sport,† and thus would never be able to succeed in life. It was then that I realized for the first time that her view on the game made no sense to me. I wanted to be a writer, not a tennis player. In fact, the time I spent playing tennis was taking time that I would have utilized with paper and a pen. It disturbed me to think that the only reason I played tennis was to triumph over others. My mother didn’t care when I came up with an innovative story idea. She cared when I won. Now I mostly hit around leisurely with friends, getting sufficient exercise in the process. When someone does want to play a real game, I don’t mind, but it no longer fazes me if I win or lose a point, or if someone cheats me out of one I had deserved. I’ve come to the realization that I don’t need to win a match to instill self-respect. My mother sees that I’m happier now and that I don’t necessarily have the same views as her, and she has accepted that. To some winning is everything, and I’m not discrediting that viewpoint, but I’d rather just enjoy myself and focus the majority of my motivational energy into my passion – writing. I’m proud to call myself a Boy Without A Sport.
